Iowa’s Disaster Proclamation Activates Insurance Bulletin Requesting Policy Cancellation/Nonrenewal Leniency

On March 5, 2022, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for Madison County following severe weather, which included tornadoes, thunderstorms, and damaging winds.  The state’s emergency proclamation activates Insurance Bulletin 19-04, initially issued on June 17, 2019.  The Bulletin calls on insurers to extend relief to consumers impacted by severe weather or a natural disaster and outlines the request for a policy cancellation grace period due to nonpayment or late payment.

On March 7, 2022, Governor Reynolds issued a supplementary disaster proclamation expanding the state of emergency for the following nine additional counties: Adair, Benton, Decatur, Jasper, Lucas, Polk, Tama, Warren, and Wayne.  It also declares that the state of emergency shall remain in effect until April 6, 2022, unless terminated sooner or further extended by Governor Reynolds.
